This study material has been designed for the students of the University of Helsinki who are taking the Student’s digital skills study course. The material is intended both for online learning and as support material for classroom learning.

Introduction

This section will show you which parts and programs the computer needs in order to function. In addition, you will learn the basics of managing files and directories, you will know the most common applications, and you will be able to solve some of the most common problems that may occur when using a computer. This section will also teach you the basic structure of the Internet, the different kinds of services available online, and the so-called netiquette. In addition, you will learn how to utilize various audio and video resources in your studies.

The UH Environment

When you have studied this section, you should be able to use the IT services offered you by the university. It contains basic information about user accounts, home directories, e-mail, monitoring your personal studies, study plans and remote access to the university’s network services, etc.
